Frequently Asked Questions

I can buy an oximeter online for $25. Why is Oxaros important?

Plenty of oximeters are available for $25, but none of them are accurate and FDA approved for hospital use (hospital-grade). Cheap oximeters give faulty readings and are impractical for medical use.

Why are other hospital-grade oximeters so expensive?

Most hospital-grade oximeters have complex and relatively expensive components, some of which are not necessarily directed toward the needs of patients and doctors. We have replaced these components with more efficient processes to provide single-point and continuous monitoring of blood oxygen saturation at a much lower cost.

Aside from the technology, companies that produce oximeters keep prices high to profit. Many hospitals in developed countries are willing to pay $200+ for an oximeter, so prices are inflated. Oxaros is a nonprofit, so our margins are much thinner.

Why Botswana and Namibia?

We chose Botswana and Namibia as our target region so we could maximize impact:

  • Above average urban healthcare, but substandard rural quality of care

  • Only 10% of region population has access to oximetry

  • Politically and economically stable

  • English is a common language, which aids product implementation

  • No other oximetry-focused organizations operating in the area

Do you correct for skin tone bias?

Yes, we do. Our oximeter utilizes an adjusted SpO2 formula approved by experts at Emory University to decrease melanin bias.

Why the $20 price tag?

$20 is the total cost for us to produce and distribute an oximeter, from our facility to your doorstep. Around $10 of that price tag goes towards the physical components of the oximeter, $5 goes towards distribution (we partner with existing organizations to significantly reduce shipping costs), and the rest will help us expand operations.

Unlike current oximeter producers, Oxaros is not profit-driven. We aim to maximize impact while breaking even, which enables us to lower our product cost.

What is Oxaros' impact potential?

We aim to produce and distribute a hospital-grade pulse oximeter an order of magnitude cheaper than current products, potentially saving up to 80,000 lives in our target region.

Can I buy an Oxaros oximeter?

We are still in the process of finalizing our product, but we aim to launch by July 2023. If you are interested in pre-ordering, please contact us here.
